Elements vs Molecules
"Carbon" and "Carbon dioxide" are not the same
If "benzopyrene is not an element but a molecule" suddenly feels confusing, read this first.
Element
An element is "a type of atom."
The periodic table's 118 entries are all elements. Hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), carbon (C), iron (Fe), gold (Au) β each name refers to one kind of atom.
What defines an element is the number of protons (atomic number). Hydrogen has 1 proton, carbon has 6, oxygen has 8. Same proton count = same element. Different = different element.
Molecule
A molecule is "a unit of two or more bonded atoms."
Atoms usually can't float around alone. They want to bond with others to form stable units. That bonded unit is a molecule.
HβO = 2 hydrogen + 1 oxygen (water molecule)
Oβ = 2 oxygen (oxygen gas molecule)
COβ = 1 carbon + 2 oxygen (carbon dioxide molecule)
CββHββ = 20 carbon + 12 hydrogen (benzopyrene molecule)

Confusing Cases
"Oxygen" has two meanings.
Oxygen as an element = atomic number 8, symbol O
The oxygen we breathe = oxygen gas = Oβ molecule
When people say "oxygen in the air," they actually mean Oβ molecules. Pure element O barely exists alone in nature.
Same for carbon and carbon dioxide.
Carbon (C) = element. Pencil lead, diamond, graphite are all carbon.
Carbon dioxide (COβ) = molecule. The gas you exhale.
"Reduce carbon dioxide" means reducing COβ emissions, not eliminating element C itself (which is impossible).
Monatomic Molecules β The Exception
Some atoms are stable on their own. Noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, etc.).
Helium (He) acts as a "molecule" while being a single atom β floats around solo without bonding. This is called a monatomic molecule.
So the "two or more atoms" rule has exceptions. "Independent chemical unit" is a more accurate definition.
Compound vs Molecule (Bonus)
Similar terms but different.
Molecule: Same elements OK too. Oβ and Nβ are molecules.
Compound: Made of different elements. HβO, COβ, CββHββ.
All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds. Oβ is a molecule β but not a compound β.
Also, some compounds aren't molecules. Salt (NaCl) is an ionic crystal β sodium and chloride ions in a lattice. Saying "one molecule of NaCl" is technically wrong, though it's common shorthand.
