Where You Encounter It

1) Bootleg / Home-Distilled Alcohol

Methanol's boiling point (64.7°C) is lower than ethanol's (78.4°C), so it vaporizes first during distillation. It concentrates in the "head" cut described in distilled-spirits. Professional distillers cut and discard the head precisely, but home distillers often misjudge it and methanol contaminates the spirit.

Major incidents:

  • India (2020, 2022, etc.) — bootleg alcohol kills 100+ people every few months

  • Indonesia, Philippines — fake-alcohol incidents at tourist spots

  • Korea had similar deaths from "industrial methanol soju" until the 1980s

2) Industrial Uses

  • Antifreeze (windshield washer fluid) — methanol is a main ingredient

  • Fuel (methanol cars, fuel cells)

  • Chemical feedstock — formaldehyde → plastics, adhesives

  • Paint thinner, biodiesel feedstock

Industrial methanol is treated as "denatured alcohol" — bittered or poisoned to prevent drinking. Yet accidents continue.

3) Natural Occurrence

Trace methanol exists in fruit, vegetables, even human breath. About 0.04g per liter of apple juice. The amount is small and the body handles it.

Treatment — Ethanol as Antidote

Important medical fact.

The liver's ADH enzyme prefers ethanol 10-20× over methanol. So giving an intoxicated patient ethanol (IV in hospitals, or alcohol drinks) keeps ADH busy with ethanol, letting methanol pass through the kidneys unchanged → no formic acid formation.

Modern ERs use fomepizole (an ADH inhibitor) more often. Same principle, safer.

But this is for medical professionals. Don't try "drink more alcohol to cure methanol poisoning" — call emergency immediately.

Hard to Self-Detect

When you receive alcohol of unknown origin, there's essentially no reliable way for a layperson to test for methanol contamination.

Field test kits exist but accuracy is low. Safest rule: only drink alcohol from verified sources. Avoid street/back-alley fake whiskey while traveling, and home-distilled spirits where the head wasn't properly cut.
