Minamata Disease β€” A Neurological Illness Born from Industrial Wastewater

1956 Minamata Bay, Japan β€” methylmercury wastewater from Chisso factory caused one of the worst environmental disasters in history

Minamata is a small fishing town in southwest Kumamoto Prefecture, on the Shiranui Sea. In 1908, the Chisso chemical factory was established, and the town grew around it.

Onset

Things turned strange in the 1950s.

  • Cats ran wild and jumped into the sea ("dancing cat disease")

  • Crows fell from the sky

  • Fishermen's children couldn't walk

  • Hands trembled too much to hold rice bowls

  • People lost their speech

On April 21, 1956, a 5-year-old girl was admitted to Chisso's hospital. Days later, her sister and neighborhood children showed the same symptoms. On May 1, the hospital director formally reported "an outbreak of unknown central nervous system disease" to the health center. That date is the official discovery of Minamata disease.

Chisso's secret

Chisso produced acetaldehyde (CH₃CHO) using mercuric sulfate (HgSOβ‚„) as catalyst. The reaction generated methylmercury as a byproduct.

The wastewater flowed untreated into Minamata Bay β€” from 1932 to 1968, about 36 years.

The concentration cycle

Methylmercury β†’ plankton β†’ small fish β†’ large fish β†’ townspeople and cats.

Fish in Minamata Bay had mercury concentrations dozens to hundreds of times that of normal seas. Fishermen's families ate that fish daily.

Delayed identification

Kumamoto University's research team announced in 1959 that organic mercury was the cause. Chisso denied it. The government, prioritizing industry, delayed an official conclusion.

The government officially acknowledged Chisso wastewater as the cause in September 1968 β€” twelve years after discovery. The wastewater kept flowing all that time.

Patient count

As of 2024, around 3,000 officially recognized patients and ~2,300 deaths. But due to strict recognition criteria, actual victims are estimated above 10,000. Lawsuits by "unrecognized" patients continue today.

Niigata Minamata Disease

In 1965, identical symptoms appeared along the Agano River, Niigata. Cause: methylmercury wastewater from Showa Denko. Even after Minamata was known, another factory was doing the same thing.

Minamata Convention

In 2013, the UN Environment Programme adopted the "Minamata Convention on Mercury." Entered force in 2017. Bans mercury mining, restricts manufacture and trade of mercury-containing products (some thermometers, fluorescent lamps).

Naming the convention after the city carries the message "never again."
