Ammonia (NH₃) — The Strong Base Feeding Half of Humanity
The smell of urine, household cleaner, and food for 8 billion people
Ammonia is a simple molecule of one nitrogen (N) and three hydrogens (H) — NH₃. A colorless gas at room temperature with an extremely sharp smell. That sharp odor in bathrooms, animal stalls, and strong cleaners — that's ammonia.
It dissolves readily in water to form "ammonia water." Commercial cleaning ammonia is this aqueous solution (typically 5-10%).
Strong Base
Ammonia sits on the opposite side of the pH table from hydrochloric-acid.
1M ammonia solution → pH 11.6
Commercial cleaning ammonia (5-10%) → pH 11-12
Anhydrous ammonia (liquid) → causes chemical burns on contact
pH 12 is a much stronger base than baking soda water (pH 8-9). Not as extreme as lye (pH 13-14), but far from mild.
Where You Encounter It
1) Cleaning Products
Glass cleaner, heavy-duty cleaners, hair dye. Alkalis dissolve grease via saponification. Ammonia's specialty: cutting through grime on glass without leaving streaks.
2) Body and Animals — Protein Breakdown Byproduct
When you eat protein, your body breaks it into amino acids and produces ammonia as a byproduct. Ammonia is toxic, so the liver immediately converts it to urea which goes to the kidneys and out as urine.
Liver failure (cirrhosis, hepatic failure) blocks this conversion → blood ammonia accumulates → hepatic encephalopathy.
Why old urine smells worse than fresh: urease bacteria break down urea back into ammonia.
3) Food
Hongeo (Korean fermented skate) — urea in skate flesh breaks down to ammonia during fermentation. That eye-watering pungency is ammonia
Surströmming (Swedish fermented herring) — same mechanism
Blue cheese, Limburger — trace ammonia from protein breakdown
Spoiled shrimp/fish — strong ammonia smell signals decomposition
4) Nature and Industry
Trace amounts from animal waste, leaf decay, volcanic gas. Industrially, almost all ammonia is made by synthetic fixation.
Haber-Bosch Process — Half of Humanity's Food
The real big story behind ammonia.
78% of the atmosphere is nitrogen gas (N₂), but plants can't use it directly. The N≡N triple bond is too strong to break. Plants only absorb "fixed" nitrogen like NH₃ or NO₃⁻.
In nature, root-nodule bacteria of legumes and lightning fix N₂. That natural rate could feed roughly 2 billion people, max.
Fritz Haber in 1909 discovered how to industrialize N₂ + H₂ → 2NH₃ (high temp, high pressure, iron catalyst). Carl Bosch scaled it to industrial production. This is the Haber-Bosch process.
Result:
Atmospheric nitrogen could be turned into fertilizer endlessly
Agricultural output exploded → population went 2B → 8B
About half of all protein in current humanity comes from crops grown with Haber-Bosch ammonia fertilizer
The same nitrogen feedstock also produced WWI explosives (ammonium nitrate)
Fritz Haber is called both "the man who made bread from air" and "the father of chemical weapons."
Danger — Never Mix with Bleach
hydrochloric-acid covered acid + bleach → chlorine gas. Ammonia + bleach is even more common as a household accident.
Ammonia (NH₃) + sodium hypochlorite (NaClO, bleach) → chloramine gas (NH₂Cl, NHCl₂)
Symptoms:
Nose, throat, bronchial irritation, coughing
Severe cases: pulmonary edema → respiratory failure → death
Many household incidents each year, often "while cleaning the toilet"
That's why cleaner labels say "do not mix with bleach." Acid cleaner, ammonia cleaner, bleach — pick any two and you have a problem.

Skin contact → rinse immediately with water (alkali burns)

How It Works
